Crispy BBQ Tofu Wraps

This is one of my favorite recipes! I always loved bbq wraps, and that has not changed at all since switching to a vegan diet!

Yum!! I am a huge barbecue fan — I used to make barbecue chicken wraps way too often in college before I was vegan. When I first stopped eating meat, all I could think to make was vegan alternatives of food I used to love. This was one of the first! It’s so satisfyingly crispy and flavorful, and who doesn’t love a nice customizable wrap?

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 block super firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup plant milk
  • 1 tbsp spicy brown mustard
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups cornflakes
  • salt & pepper
  • olive oil, for frying
  • tortillas
  • BBQ sauce
  • veggies, for filling

Another great thing about this recipe – it’s very economical! I have everything on the ingredients list almost every time I decide to make these… which is very often!

Method:

  • Super firm tofu is my favorite because I don’t need to press it. If you’re using extra firm, you will want to press it before getting started.
  • Slice your tofu into fingerlike strips.

You’ll need three bowls to dip the tofu in and make your breading –

  • Bowl #1: Whisk together milk, mustard, 2 tablespoons of flour, salt & pepper.
  • Bowl #2: 1/2 cup flour
  • Bowl #3: 2 cups crushed cornflakes
  • Heat a few tablespoons of oil in a frying pan.
  • Dip the tofu in the bowls in the following order: #1, 2, 1, 3.
  • Fry the tofu on all sides until crispy and golden brown.
  • Toss tofu in barbecue sauce & assemble your wraps. Enjoy & share!
